Check out Mrs. Doherty’s third grade class who had fun with a hands-on activity that connected their interests with important math concepts like area, multiplication, and measurement.
First, students designed their own squishies! They measured, drew, and cut out two rectangles (9 cm x 13 cm), then calculated the area of each one. Once they had their pieces, they got creative and assembled their squishy designs.
Next, they worked in small collaborative groups to solve real-world math problems:
-If they made 28 squishies using 4 oz of cotton each, and the teacher had 150 oz, would they have enough?
-How much money could they make selling them for $8 each if supplies cost $10?
Students applied the break-apart multiplication strategies they’ve been practicing in Zearn to tackle these problems and they were fully engaged and loving every minute of it!
